Diagnostic features Stems to 40(80)cm (often less than 20cm), evergreen, usually rough to touch, simple or branched at base, with 4-10 2-angled ridges Cones on normal vegetative shoots, bluntly apiculate.
Chromosome number: 2n=216.
Habitat, ecology and distribution Native; dune slacks, river-banks, lake-shores, wet stony mountain sites; scattered in Ireland and West & North Britain, very rare in Central & South England.
