Stinking Hellebore

Scientific name: Helleborus foetidus L.

Diagnostic features
Not rhizomatous.
Stems to 80cm, erect.
Flowers 1-3cm across, bell-shaped.
Sepals yellowish-green usually tinged purplish.

Chromosome number: (2n=32).

Habitat
Probably native; woods and scrub on calcareous soils.

Distribution
Very local in South & West Britain East to East Kent and North to North Wales, also common in gardens and naturalized outside native range in Britain North to Central Scotland.
