Tree to 24m, not suckering at base.
Winter buds sessile, glabrous, with bud-scales.
Fruits ellipsoid, mostly more than 3cm.

Chromosome number: (2n=32).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized.

Distribution
Commonly planted and often surviving in wild places, but self-sown only in warmer parts; most of Britain; Southeast Europe and Asia.
