Diagnostic features
Deciduous tree to 26m.
Winter buds c.10mm.
Leaves (2)5-12(18)cm, ovate-oblong, finely serrate to subentire or crenate, pubescent on veins on lowerside, with 14-24 pairs of lateral veins.
Cupules with deeply laciniate scales.

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized.

Distribution
Widely planted and self-sowing as for Nothofagus obliqua; Chile and West Argentina.
