Turkey Oak

Scientific name: Quercus cerris L.

Diagnostic features
Tree to 40m.
Leaves deciduous, cuneate to subcordate at base, lobed to c.1/2 way or more to midrib with acute to subobtuse lobes, usually pubescent on lowerside.
Petiole 1-2.5cm.
Peduncle less than 2cm.
Cupule with patent to reflexed scales up to 1cm.

Chromosome number: (2n=24).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized.

Distribution
Commonly grown for ornament, often naturalized on acid sands in South Britain; British Isles North to Central Scotland; South Europe.

Note
Variable in its native area, with several subspecies recognised, but resemblance of naturalized plants in Britain to any of these might be coincidental rather than indicating a particular wild origin.
