Diagnostic features
Erect simple to slightly branched annual to 1m, with abundant appressed hairs.
Flowers on long individual stalks.
Petal-limb purple with dark streaks, exceeded by calyx-lobe.

Chromosome number: 2n=48.

Habitat
Introduced-casual; cultivated and waste ground, formerly common in cornfields.

Distribution
Formerly scattered over most of British Isles but now very rare and only casual; Europe.
