Diagnostic features
Tree to 24m, rather similar in habit to Populus alba.
Leaves suborbicular, coarsely and bluntly sinuate-dentate, glabrous or rarely sparsely pubescent at maturity.
Sucker leaves ovate-cordate, pubescent.

Chromosome number: 2n=38.

Habitat
Native; woods and hedgerows on all sorts of soils, often forming suckering thickets.

Distribution
Throughout British Isles.
