Diagnostic features
Tall shrub or slender tree to 10(18)m.
Twigs glabrous, violet-brown, glossy but with dense whitish bloom, not pendent.
Leaves (4)7-12(14) x (1)2-3(4)cm, soon glabrous, closely and finely serrate.
Stamens free.

Chromosome number: 2n=38.

Habitat
Introduced-survivor; widely planted (both sexes) and sometimes found in wild places.

Distribution
Very sparsely scattered in Britain; Scandinavia.
