Diagnostic features
Shrub or small tree to 10(19)m.
Twigs pubescent to sparsely so at first, becoming glabrous, glossy or dull.
Stamens free.

Chromosome number: 2n=38.

Habitat
Native.

This species is keyed out on Page 1628 in the Text Key.

Key to the subspecies:
a. Leaves 5-12 x 2.5-8cm, densely pubescent on lowerside, irregularly undulate-serrate.

b. Leaves 3-7 x 1.5-4.5cm, densely appressed-pubescent on lowerside, entire to obscurely serrate.
................................ Salix caprea sphacelata.


Hybrids

- Salix x taylorii Rech. f. (= Salix purpurea x Salix viminalis x Salix caprea x Salix cinerea) has been reported, with some doubt, from Angus; endemic.

- Salix x reichardtii A. Kern. (= Salix caprea x Salix cinerea) is common and variable, completely linking the parents; throughout most of British Isles, in many places commoner than Salix caprea.
- Salix x capreola Jos. Kern. ex Andersson (= Salix caprea x Salix aurita) occurs scattered over Britain and Ireland.
- Salix x latifolia J. Forbes (= Salix caprea x Salix myrsinifolia) occurs in North Britain within the range of Salix myrsinifolia.
- Salix caprea x Salix myrsinifolia x Salix phylicifolia (Salix x phylicioides Druce nom. nud.) was found in Mid Perths in 1997 and Midwest Yorks in 2000; endemic.
- Salix caprea x Salix phylicifolia occurs with the parents in Central & North Scotland.
- Salix x laschiana Zahn (= Salix caprea x Salix repens) occurs with the parents in Scotland.
- Salix x laestadiana Hartm. (= Salix caprea x Salix lapponum) occurs with the parents in Mid & East Perth and Angus.
