Diagnostic features
Shrub to 2(3)m.
Twigs pubescent at first, becoming ± glabrous, dark reddish-brown, dull.
Leaves 2-4(6) x 1-3(4)cm, rugose, grey-pubescent on lowerside, subglabrous to sparsely pubescent on upperside, undulate and obscurely serrate, with twisted apex.
Stamens free.

Chromosome number: 2n=76.

Habitat
Native; heathland, scrub and rocky hills on acid soils.

Distribution
Frequent to abundant in suitable places throughout British Isles.

Hybrids
- Salix x dichroa Döll (= Salix purpurea x Salix aurita) is known from Cheviot.
- Salix x sesquitertia F.B. White (= Salix purpurea x Salix aurita x Salix phylicifolia) has been found in Dumfriess; endemic.

- Salix x hirtei Strähler (= Salix viminalis x Salix cinerea x Salix aurita) has not been recorded from the wild in British Isles, but might occur; several cultivars are being planted for biomass production. Salix x hirtei, Salix calodendron(x) and Salix stipularis(x) form a perplexing group of hybrids.
- Salix x capreola Jos. Kern. ex Andersson (= Salix caprea x Salix aurita) occurs scattered over Britain and Ireland.

- Salix x multinervis Döll (= Salix cinerea x Salix aurita) is scattered throughout most of British Isles on acid soils.
- Salix x forbesiana Druce (= Salix cinerea x Salix aurita x Salix myrsinifolia) has been found in South & Central Scotland.
- Salix x coriacea J. Forbes (= Salix aurita x Salix myrsinifolia) occurs with the parents in North British Isles.
- Salix x saxetana F.B. White (= Salix aurita x Salix myrsinifolia x Salix phylicifolia) occurs with parents in South & Central Scotland.
- Salix x ludificans F.B. White (= Salix aurita x Salix phylicifolia) occurs with the parents in North Britain. Chromosome number: 2n=42-64.
- Salix x ambigua Ehrh. (= Salix aurita x Salix repens) occurs commonly throughout British Isles wherever the parents meet.
- Salix x grahamii Borrer ex Baker (= Salix aurita x Salix repens x Salix herbacea) has been found in W Sutherland and perhaps Central Scotland, and in West Donegal.
- Salix x obtusifoliaWilld. (= Salix aurita x Salix lapponum) occurs with the parents in Central & North Scotland.
- Salix aurita x Salix lapponum x Salix herbacea (?= Salix x boydii E.F. Linton) was once found in Angus in 1998 and in South Aberdeen in 1996; endemic. See also Salix lapponum x Salix reticulata.
- Salix x margarita F.B. White (= Salix aurita x Salix herbacea) occurs with the parents in Central & North Scotland.
