Bog Bilberry

Scientific name: Vaccinium uliginosum L.

Diagnostic features
Erect to ascending shrub to 50(80)cm.
Young stems terete, glabrous to minutely pubescent.
Leaves 8-25mm, obovate, entire, deciduous.
Flowers in groups of 1-4 on short side-branches, pale pink.
Fruit bluish-black with whitish bloom, 6-10mm across, globose.

Chromosome number: 2n=39, 48.

Habitat
Native; moors.

Distribution
Locally common in Central & North Scotland, very local in South Scotland and North England, naturalized in South Somerset.

Note
Some plants from Shetland resemble Vaccinium uliginosum subsp. microphyllum Lange, from North Europe, which differs in its smaller parts, less revolute corolla-lobes and diploid (Chromosome number: 2n=24) chromosome number; they need further study.
