Red Currant
Scientific name: Ribes rubrum L.
Diagnostic features Shrub to 2m. Leaves 3-10cm, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, not scented. Flowers in pendent racemes, 4-6mm across, greenish-yellow, ± glabrous. Hypanthium saucer-shaped. Anther-lobes distinctly separated by connective. Berry 6-10mm across, red or rarely whitish.
Chromosome number: 2n=16.
Habitat Probably introduced-naturalized; woods, hedges and scrub, much grown and often obviously relict or escaped.
Distribution Throughout most of British Isles but rare in many places; Europe.
