Scientific name: Filipendula camtschatica (Pall.) Maxim.

Diagnostic features
Stems erect, to 3m.
Leaves densely pubescent on lowerside, with 1 large, lobed terminal leaflet and 1-2 pairs of very small laterals.
Flowers less than5mm across, red, pink or white.

Chromosome number: (2n=14, 18, 28, 42, 44).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; planted in damp places and sometimes naturalized.

Distribution
Very scattered in Britain, especially Scotland and North England, West Ireland; East Asia.

This species is keyed out on Page 2254 in the Text Key.

Note
Plants with pink to red flowers are often referred uncritically to Filipendula purpurea Maxim., from Japan or to Filipendula rubra (Hill) Robinson, from North America, but these are ± glabrous and our plants are probably cultivars of Filipendula camtschatica or hybrids of it. Filipendula purpurea and Filipendula rubra are grown in gardens.
