Purple-flowered Raspberry

Scientific name: Rubus odoratus L.

Diagnostic features
Stems to 3m, erect, with glandular and non-glandular hairs.
Leaves simple, ± orbicular, with 3-5 acute lobes.
Flowers in panicles of usually more than6, purple, 3-5cm across.
Fruit red.

Chromosome number: (2n=14).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; grown for ornament, occasionally naturalized in rough places.

Distribution
Very scattered in South England; East North America.

Hybrids
- Rubus x fraseri Rehder (= Rubus odoratus x Rubus parviflorus) has been naturalized in roadside scrub in West Sussex since 1985; garden origin.
