Thimbleberry

Scientific name: Rubus parviflorus Nutt.

Diagnostic features
Stems to 2m, erect, with glandular and non-glandular hairs.
Leaves simple, ± orbicular, with 3-5 acute lobes.
Flowers in corymbs of 3-6(10), white, 3-6cm across.
Fruit red.

Chromosome number: (2n=14).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; grown for ornament, occasionally naturalized in rough ground.

Distribution
Very scattered in Britain, North Kerry; West North America.

Hybrids
- Rubus x fraseri Rehder (= Rubus odoratus x Rubus parviflorus) has been naturalized in roadside scrub in West Sussex since 1985; garden origin.
