Spineless Acaena

Scientific name: Acaena inermis Hook. f.

Diagnostic features
Herbaceous stems to 6cm.
Leaflets (7)11-13, bluish grey-green tinged brown or orange, the apical pair 2-8mm, c. as long as wide, with 5-10 teeth.
Carpels and stigmas 2.
Spines usually absent, sometimes 1-4, not or scarcely barbed.

Chromosome number: (2n=42).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; grown in gardens and naturalized on barish ground.

Distribution
Very scattered in Scotland, Carms; New Zealand.

Hybrids
- Acaena anserinifolia x Acaena inermis was found in 1967 at Batworthy Brook, Dartmoor, South Devon, and is grown in gardens; most flowers have 2 stigmas but develop spines.
