Scientific name: Rosa arvensis Huds.

Diagnostic features
Weakly trailing, to 1(2)m.
Leaves with 5-7 leaflets, glabrous or almost so on lowerside, usually 1-serrate, usually glandless.
Flowers 1-few, white, 3-5cm across.
Fruit globose to ellipsoid, 0.8-1.5cm.

Chromosome number: 2n=14.

Habitat
Native; low scrub, hedgerows, woods and open places.

Distribution
Frequent in England, Wales and much of Ireland, very rare in Man and Scotland.

The following hybrids occur; those with Rosa arvensis as female parent usually resemble that species in habit but have pink petals and other characters (often pubescent leaves) indicating the male parent; those with a species of Section Caninae as female parent usually resemble the latter in habit (and pubescence) but reveal various features of Rosa arvensis on inspection.

- Rosa x paulii Rehder (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa rugosa) is a garden plant (white-flowered like its Rosa rugosa parent) found ± naturalized in London (Surrey).
- Rosa x pseudorusticana Crép. ex Preston (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa stylosa and Rosa stylosa x Rosa arvensis) (Synonym: Rosa x bibracteoides Wolley-Dod); South Britain North to Worcs, Co Dublin.
- Rosa x irregularis Déségl. & Guillon (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa canina and Rosa canina x Rosa arvensis) (Synonyms: Rosa x deseglisei Boreau, Rosa x kosinskiana Besser, Rosa x verticillacantha Mérat, Rosa x wheldonii Wolley-Dod); British Isles North to South Scotland.
- Rosa arvensis x Rosa caesia subsp. vosagiaca; Central England.
- Rosa x rouyana Duffort ex Rouy (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa obtusifolia); Central Wales and Central England.
- Rosa arvensis x Rosa tomentosa; Mons.
- Rosa arvensis x Rosa sherardii and Rosa sherardii x Rosa arvensis; Leics.
- Rosa x gallicoides (Baker) Déségl. (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa rubiginosa and Rosa rubiginosa x Rosa arvensis) (Synonym: Rosa x consanguinea Gren.); England and Wales North to Derbys and Carms.
- Rosa x vituperabilis Duffort ex Rouy (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa micrantha)(Synonym: Rosa x inelegans Wolley-Dod); Central England, Central Wales and South Ireland.
