Scientific name: Rosa arvensis Huds.
Diagnostic features Weakly trailing, to 1(2)m. Leaves with 5-7 leaflets, glabrous or almost so on lowerside, usually 1-serrate, usually glandless. Flowers 1-few, white, 3-5cm across. Fruit globose to ellipsoid, 0.8-1.5cm.
Chromosome number: 2n=14.
Habitat Native; low scrub, hedgerows, woods and open places.
Distribution Frequent in England, Wales and much of Ireland, very rare in Man and Scotland.

The following hybrids occur; those with Rosa arvensis as female parent usually resemble that species in habit but have pink petals and other characters (often pubescent leaves) indicating the male parent; those with a species of Section Caninae as female parent usually resemble the latter in habit (and pubescence) but reveal various features of Rosa arvensis on inspection.
