Scientific name: Rosa stylosa Desv.
Diagnostic features Stems arching, to 3(4)m, with hooked prickles. Leaflets pubescent on lowerside, 1-serrate, eglandular. Flowers white to pale pink, 3-5cm across. Fruit ovoid, 1-2cm, ± glabrous, pedicels 2-4cm, usually glandular-pubescent. Sepals reflexed after flowering, falling before fruit ripe.
Chromosome number: 2n=35, 42.
Habitat Native; hedges, scrub, wood-borders.
Distribution Britain and Ireland South of a line from Co Dublin to East Suffolk, but now rare.
