Small-flowered Sweet-briar

Scientific name: Rosa micrantha Borrer ex Sm.

Diagnostic features
Differs from Rosa rubiginosa in stems arching, often scrambling, to 3m.
Prickles ± equal.
Flowers 2-3.5cm across.
Fruit 1-2cm.
Pedicels 1-2cm, rarely glabrous.
Sepals mostly reflexed, falling before fruit reddens.
Styles glabrous or nearly so.

Chromosome number: 2n=35, 42.

Habitat
Native; similar places to Rosa rubiginosa but often not on calcareous soils.

Distribution
Scattered throughout England, Wales and S Ireland, local in Channel Islands, very rare in Scotland.

The following additional hybrids has been recorded:
- Rosa x vituperabilis Duffort ex Rouy (= Rosa arvensis x Rosa micrantha) (Synonym: Rosax inelegans Wolley-Dod); Central England, Central Wales and South Ireland.
- Rosa x toddiae Wolley-Dod (= Rosa canina x Rosa micrantha and Rosa micrantha x Rosa canina); scattered in Britain North to East Suffolk and North Wales, East & West Cork.
-Rosa x longicolla Ravaud ex Rouy (= Rosa caesia x Rosa micrantha only; Rosa caesia glauca only); Brecs.
- Rosa obtusifolia x Rosa micrantha; North Somerset.
- Rosa tomentosa x Rosa micrantha; South England and Cards.
- Rosa sherardii x Rosa micrantha; Mid Wales and West Cork.
- Rosa x bigeneris Duffort ex Rouy (= Rosa micrantha x Rosa rubiginosa); Southeast England and East & Mid Cork.
- Rosa x bigeneris Duffort ex Rouy (= Rosa micrantha x Rosa rubiginosa); Southeast England and East & Mid Cork.
- Rosa x bishopii Wolley-Dod (= Rosa micrantha x Rosa agrestis and Rosa micrantha x Rosa agrestis); South England.
