Small-flowered Sweet-briar
Scientific name: Rosa micrantha Borrer ex Sm.
Diagnostic features Differs from Rosa rubiginosa in stems arching, often scrambling, to 3m. Prickles ± equal. Flowers 2-3.5cm across. Fruit 1-2cm. Pedicels 1-2cm, rarely glabrous. Sepals mostly reflexed, falling before fruit reddens. Styles glabrous or nearly so.
Chromosome number: 2n=35, 42.
Habitat Native; similar places to Rosa rubiginosa but often not on calcareous soils.
Distribution Scattered throughout England, Wales and S Ireland, local in Channel Islands, very rare in Scotland.
