Dwarf Cherry

Scientific name: Prunus cerasus L.

Diagnostic features
Deciduous shrub or small tree to 8m.
Differs from Prunus avium in hypanthium saucer- to cup-shaped, not constricted at opening.
Flowers fewer per umbel (mostly 2-4) with shorter pedicels (1-4cm) hence mixed more among the leaves than projecting beyond.
Some bud-scales at base of flowers usually green and leaf-like.
Fruit bright red, never sweet.

Chromosome number: (2n=32).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; hedges and copses.

Distribution
Throughout most of British Isles North to Central Scotland, but much confused with Prunus avium and distribution uncertain; Southwest Asia.
