Evergreen shrub or tree to 12m.
Leaves narrowly ovate to oblong-ovate, 6-13cm.
Flowers in 10-25cm racemes.
Petals white.
Fruit conical-ovoid, mostly 8-10mm, purplish-black.

Chromosome number: (2n=64).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; commonly planted, sometimes naturalized in woods, shrubberies and waste land.

Distribution
Scattered in Britain North to Central Scotland; Southwest Europe.
