Diagnostic features
Evergreen shrub or tree to 10m.
Leaves usually oblong-ovate, 5-15cm.
Flowers in 7-13cm racemes.
Petals white.
Fruit conical-ovoid, mostly10-12mm, purplish-black to ± black.

Chromosome number: (2n=144, 170-180).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; abundantly planted, sometimes naturalized in woods and shrubberies.

Distribution
Throughout most of British Isles; Southeast Europe.
