Diagnostic features
Open ± spiny shrub to 3m.
Leaves 4-10cm, ovate to obovate, glabrous.
Flowers 3.5-4.5cm across, usually red.
Fruit up to 7.5cm, yellowish-green.

Chromosome number: (2n=34).

Habitat
Introduced-survivor; not or rarely regenerating but very persistent in hedges and woods.

Distribution
Scattered in Channel Islands and South England; China.
