Japanese Quince
Scientific name: Chaenomeles japonica (Thunb.) Spach
Diagnostic features Open ± spiny shrub to 1m. Twigs becoming glabrous and distinctly warty. Leaves smaller (2.5-6cm) and more coarsely toothed than in Chaenomeles speciosa. Flowers 3.5-4cm across, usually pink. Fruit up to 5cm.
Chromosome number: (2n=34).
Habitat Introduced-survivor; persistent as in Chaenomeles speciosa but apparently less so.
Distribution Rare in South England; Japan.
