Scientific name: Malus domestica Borkh.

Diagnostic features
Tree to 10(20)m, not spiny.
Similar to Malus sylvestris but larger in most parts.
Leaves up to 15cm, pubescent on lowerside, with relatively shorter petiole.
Fruit up to 12cm, variously coloured.

Chromosome number: (2n=34).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; much grown and often naturalized in hedges, scrub and waste ground.

Distribution
Throughout British Isles and much commoner than Malus sylvestris; garden origin.

Note
Self-sown plants usually have small, yellowish, sour fruits.
