Diagnostic features
Tree to 6m.
Spines very sparse.
Leaves strongly heterophyllous, narrowly oblong to elliptic, some with 3-5 forward-directed lobes, some unlobed.
Fruits oblong, 10-18mm, bright red, with 1 nutlet and style.

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; planted in parks, rarely self-sown.

Distribution
Naturalized in urban woodland in Middlesex, Surrey and Midlothian; Caucasus.

Hybrids
- Crataegus monogyna x Crataegus heterophylla has arisen naturally in a wooded cemetery in Surrey with both parents and apparently backcrosses; endemic.
