Annual, with spirally climbing stem to 3m or (usually) not climbing.
Flowers up to 6, white, sometimes purplish.
Cotyledons borne above ground.

Chromosome number: (2n=22).

Habitat
Introduced-casual; much grown as vegetable and frequent on tips and in waste places.

Distribution
Scattered throughout lowland Britain; South America.
