Perennial with tuberous roots but rarely surviving winter, with climbing stem to 5m.
Flowers up to 20, bright red, rarely white; cotyledons subterranean.

Chromosome number: (2n=22).

Habitat
Introduced-casual.

Distribution
Much grown as vegetable and casual as for Phaseolus vulgaris; tropical America.
