Diagnostic features
Climbing perennial to 1.2m.
Stems not winged.
Leaflets 1 pair, elliptic to narrowly obovate.
Tendrils branched.
Flowers 2-7, 12-20mm, reddish-purple.

Chromosome number: 2n=14.

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; cornfields, hedgerows and roadsides.

Distribution
Naturalized in North Essex since 1859, scattered throughout Britain North to Central Scotland but casual or shortly persisting only in most places; Europe.
