Diagnostic features
Climbing or scrambling perennial to 2m.
Stems winged.
Leaflets 1 pair, linear to narrowly elliptic (more than 4x as long as wide).
Tendrils branched.
Stipules less than 1/2 as wide as stem.
Flowers 3-8(12), 12-20mm, dull pinkish-purple.
All calyx-teeth shorter than tube.
Ovules 9-15 per ovary.

Chromosome number: (2n=14).

Habitat
Native; scrub, wood-borders, hedgerows, rough ground.

Distribution
Scattered throughout Britain North to Central Scotland, but introduced in many places, especially in North.
