Scientific name: Medicago polymorpha L.

Diagnostic features
Procumbent to scrambling annual to 60cm, ± glabrous when mature.
Stipules laciniate.
Flowers 1-8, 3-4.5mm, yellow.
Fruits of 1.5-5(6) coils, glabrous, usually with rather slender spines grooved near base.

Chromosome number: (2n=14, 16).

Habitat
Native; very local in sandy ground near sea.

Distribution
Channel Islands, South England North to South Somerset and West Norfolk; also common casual throughout British Isles in waste places, often in wool.

Note
The species most often lacking fruit spines.
