Nootka Lupin

Scientific name: Lupinus nootkatensis Donn ex Sims

Diagnostic features
Stems erect, to 1m, usually with long shaggy hairs.
Leaflets 6-9(12), mostly less than 6cm, oblanceolate.
Lower lip of calyx 7-13mm.
Corolla bluish-purple, sometimes whitish tinged purplish.

Chromosome number: 2n=48.

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; on riverside shingle and moorland since at least 1862.

Distribution
Central & North Scotland from Mid Perth to Orkney, especially by River Tay and River Dee, Northwest Ireland; Northwest North America and Northeast Asia.

Hybrids
- Lupinus regalis(x) x Lupinus nootkatensis probably occurs on river-shingle with the parents in Moray and Mid Perth, but is difficult to identify; it is intermediate and fertile.
- Lupinus x pseudopolyphyllus C.P. Sm. (= Lupinus polyphyllus x Lupinus nootkatensis) occurs with the parents on river-shingle in Moray and Mid Perth; it is intermediate and fertile.
