Diagnostic features
Leaves often more than 2m across, peltate.
Petioles up to 2m, with reddish bristles and spines.
Inflorescences up to 1.2m, with slender branches more than 10cm.

Chromosome number: (2n=34).

Habitat
Introduced-survivor; planted as for Gunnera tinctoria and fertile but not recorded as self-sown.

Distribution
Scarcely naturalized but persistent throughout much of lowland British Isles; South Brazil.
