Diagnostic features
Tree to 30m.
Leaves simple, with 5-7 acuminate lobes each with few large acuminate teeth or sub-lobes.
Flowers in ± erect, yellowish-green corymbs appearing ± before leaves.
Fruits with widely divergent to ± horizontal wings.

Chromosome number: (2n=26).

Habitat
Introduced-naturalized; abundantly planted and often self-sown in rough grassland, scrub, hedges and woodland.

Distribution
Throughout lowland British Isles; Europe.
