Diagnostic features
Erect annual to 1m, with branched and glandular simple hairs.
Many spines present on stems, leaves and calyx.
Leaves deeply pinnately lobed.
Flowers (1)2-10.
Corolla white or purplish.
5 anthers of equal length.
Fruit red, globose, 12-20mm, enclosed but not completely obscured by calyx.

Chromosome number: (2n=24).

Habitat
Introduced-casual; waste places and cultivated ground, from wool and other sources.

Distribution
Scattered in South Britain; South America.
