Wall Germander
Scientific name: Teucrium chamaedrys L.
Diagnostic features Dwarf evergreen shrub. Stems suberect to decumbent, to 40cm. Leaves serrate, cuneate at base, shortly petiolate. Corolla pinkish-purple.
Chromosome number: (2n=32, 58, 60, 62, 64, 96).
Habitat Native; chalk grassland at 1 site in East Sussex, discovered 1945, also grown in gardens and naturalized on old walls and dry banks.
Distribution Very scattered in British Isles North to Central Scotland, mainly South England, decreasing; Europe.

Note Garden plants are often more robust and less hairy and are probably the hybrid Teucrium chamaedrys x Teucrium lucidum L.; some or most naturalized plants might be this also. |
