Wild Marjoram

Scientific name: Origanum vulgare L.

Diagnostic features
Stems erect, to 50(80)cm.
Leaves ovate, 1-4cm.
Corolla 4-7mm.

Chromosome number: 2n=30.

Habitat
Native; dry grassland, hedgebanks and scrub, usually on calcareous soils.

Distribution
Locally common in British Isles North to Central Scotland.

Note
Grown as the herb oregano; the herb marjoram is Origanum majorana L. (Pot Marjoram), a rare casual from North Africa and Southwest Asia.
