Near-Threatened Inhabits the open floor of tall primary forest in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and islands in between. Restricted to lowlands, where all primary forest is cut at a rapid scale, but the bird tolerates dense secondary forest and is locally still common, despite a high hunting pressure.
