Vulnerable A bird of hill forests in SE China, an area which is under heavy human pressure. Accordingly, the range has strongly contracted and the numbers strongly diminished due to habitat changes and direct persecution in the last century. Now thought to be stable in the few reserves in which it occurs, but still in decline in areas outside these, with a total population estimated at 5000 birds or less. Thrives in captivity.
