Vulnerable A highly colourful tanager restricted to mature Atlantic forest in the coastal zone of NE Brazil. Much of the habitat has been deforested, or is replaced by secondary forest without the epiphytes needed for nesting. Only 95 km2 of suitable habitat remains, divided over a number of small fragments. The bird is also in high demand for the cage bird trade, and with new roads still cut through the last remnants of the forest, easying access, the survival of the bird even on short term is doubtful.
