Vulnerable A bird of tall undisturbed primary forest in the wet zone of southwest and central Sri Lanka. Deforestations, replacement of forests by plantations, selective logging, and encroaching settlements with related persecution and disturbance all contributed to a marked contraction and fragmentation of the bird's range, and no more than a few thousand are estimated to survive at present. As the threats continue, further declines are to be expected, also because it is probably more subject to nest parasitism by the Koel cuckoo Eudynamis scolopacea in areas opened up.
