Near-Threatened A powerful South American eagle occurring in open woodland, marshland, and savanne covered with sparse trees and abundant bushes and scrub where its prey (birds, medium-sized mammals, reptiles) tries to seek protection. Rarely seen and apparently only thinly distributed. Steadily declining where the scrub (with the prey) is removed to improve the country for grazing by livestock, or where its habitat is converted to agricultural fields. The number remaining is difficult to estimate, but densities are low.
